It took its lead in the middle age of Mughal era (16-19th century) as a symbol of grace, nobility and royalty.
There are regional variations in the pattern of this lehenga Choli. Phulkari embroidery is followed in Punjab region, mirror work with bandhani fabric is emphasized in Gujarat region while in Rajasthan, this is the traditional attire composed of vibrant colors, gota patti by the use of Bandhani fabrics. Bengali bridal Lehenga Choli is presented with red and white colors embellished with gold zari. South Indian Lehenga Choli, called Dhavani, often comes with Kanjivaram Silk made of light fabrics woven with wide jacquard.
